Chronic complications of diabetes mellitus in patients covered

| Summary: Chronic complications of diabetes have a more and more important place in general morbidity and mortality. It is because of higher incidence of diabetes and because of life prolongation of patients with diabetes. The aim of this work is to present chronic complications of diabetes mellitus in patients of the Home Treatment and Care Service in Bor and to point to the importance of its prevention. The data is obtained from medical charts of the Home Treatment and Care Service. They show that 76% have at least one chronic complication and 43% have two or more complications, of which the most frequent are cardiovascular complications (63% of patients with complications). Further analysis establishes the difference in the number and frequency of same complications between the group of patients using insulin and patients using oral therapy. The costs of diabetes are analysed between the group of patients with no or just one chronic complication and the group of patients with two or more chronic complications. The analysis has shown a very significant statistical difference. The costs differences between the two groups refer to the costs of treatment of chronic complications. The costs are as high as 90% of the total amount spent on the treatment of patients with diabetes with a number of complications. Chronic complications of diabetes mellitus registered in a number of patients influence the quality of their lives and increase the costs of treatment as well. It is necessary for both physicians and patients to be more involved in successful prevention of diabetes mellitus and its chronic complications.
