  Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Vasomotor rhinitis is a chronic, non-infectious, non-allergic, hyperactive rhinitis based on autoimmune nervous system imbalance. AIM OF WORK: Selection of adequate therapy of the disease following diagnosis establishment. METHOD: The analytical study was based on the therapeutic approach modalities in 198 patients diagnosed with vasomotor rhinitis in the period 2005-2007. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group I were treated with oral antihistamines along with the application of isotonic NaCl solution and group II were treated with oral antihistamines and intranasal glucocorticoids in the period of 6 weeks along with monitoring of clinical signs and symptoms, nasal secretion, nasal obstruction, sneezing and nasal congestion. RESULTS: Out of 198 patients diagnosed with vasomotor rhinitis belonging to almost all age groups, 154 patients (76.3%) between 15 and 14 years of age, of which 124 patients were males, nasal obstruction as the leading symptom was evidenced in 101 patients (51.0%). As for group I, nasal secretion was discontinued in 21 patients (22.2%), nasal obstruction in 48 patients (48.5%), sneezing in 22 patients (22.2%), and nasal congestion in 30 patients (30.3%). Complete withdrawal of symptoms ensued in 19.2% of patients after therapy administration. As for group II, nasal secretion was almost completely discontinued in 44 patients (44.5%), nasal obstruction in 71 patients (71.7%), sneezing in 42 patients (42.3%), while nasal congestion was discontinued in 56 patients (56.5%). Complete withdrawal of the symptoms of the disease was evidenced in 36 patients (36.4%). CONCLUSION: Vasomotor rhinitis, with the incidence of 10%-15% among the general population, demands adequate diagnostic and therapeutic approach, taking into account its insufficiently clear etiopathogenesis. Combined oral therapy using antihistamines with intranasal glucocorticoid administration is a treatment of choice for the disease.
