      Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is a non-inflammatory degenerative rheumatic disease of joints and/or spine. The main clinical manifestations are pain and limited joint function. Aim: to evaluate functional capacity in relation to pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective clinical investigation consisted of 40 patients of both genders, between 50 and 75 years of age, with diagnosed knee osteoarthritis, who had been referred to the Special Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Novi Sad. The vertical load tolerance was measured, as well as the walk tolerance and the knee mobility. The pain was analyzed by McGill pain Questionnaire-Short Form. For statistical analysis, parametric (analysis of variance) and non-parametric tests (Fisher test) were used. RESULTS: The study group consisted of 80% (32/40) women and 20% (8/40) men, with the average age 63(63±7.26). Vertical load tolerance between 1 and 5 min was noted in 37.5% (15/40) patients, 52.5% (21/40) patients had walk tolerance up to 5 minutes, and 62.5%(25/40) patients had satisfactory functional mobility in the affected knee. There is a negative correlation between functional parameters and all analyzed pain parameters included in the McGill pain Questionnaire-Short Form (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: Patients with knee osteoarthritis and distinctive functional disability and limited movements have more intense pain. The relationship between clinical parameters and pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis was noted and could be an important indicator of the degree of joint damage and of the choice of adequate therapy.
Key words: knee osteoarthritis, pain, functional disability
