| Summary: The aim of this study is to determine benzoic and sorbic acid levels in various types of beverages at the territory of the district of Niš in the period 2004-2008. The paper presents and analyses the published data related to the impact of benzoic and sorbic acids on health, the portion of non-alcoholic drinks in their dietetic intake, as well as the list of results of spectrophotometric analysis of benzoic and sorbic acids in refreshing non-alcoholic drinks at the Public Health Institute Niš during the period 2004-2008. The results have been discussed with respect to the related regulations. Out of 562 samples of beverages, only one contained the level of benzoic acid in excess of the maximum permitted limit of 150 mg/l, and one contained the level of sorbic acid in excess of the maximum permitted limit of 250mg/l. With respect to the results obtained in other countries of the world, refreshing non-alcoholic drinks take an important part in the total daily intake of benzoic acid. Further analyses of not only non-alcoholic drinks, but also foods with these two additives are needed for future risk assessment.
