  Summary:
The number of patients suffering from diabetes is growing and because of life prolongation, more chronic complications can be expected. Diabetic foot is a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus and it is a combination of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and angiopathy. For this reason they have at least 15 times higher risk of amputation than the non-diabetic population. The aim of this work was to show the presence of diabetic foot syndrome in patients of the Home Treatment and Care Service in Bor and to point to the importance of its prevention. The data is obtained from medical charts and medical protocols. The number of patients with diabetes mellitus is 129 and 79% have one or more chronic complications. There are 27 patients with diabetic foot, 16 of which have had surgical interventions, while the other 11 have been just bandaged. There are 11 more patients with diagnosed diabetic neuropathy and/or angiopathy, but without ulcers or gangrenous changes. During 2007, 14 patients were bandaged. The facts that bandaging sometimes took even up to 9 months and that one patient died because of sepsa speak volumes about the difficulty of this complication for medical stuff as well as for patients themselves. In addition to this, the costs of treatment of patients with diabetic foot are 5.6 times higher as compared with patients with chronic complications, but without diabetic foot. These facts call for more efforts to be put into prevention of diabetes and its complications, which should be obligatory for medical staff as well as for other social institutions, associations and also patients suffering from diabetes in the first place.
Key words: diabetes mellitus, diabetic foot, prevention
