  Summary:
Introduction: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the Nišava District. Objective: To determine epidemiological characteristics of gastric cancer in the Nišava District in the period 1996-2005 and to analyse the trend of incidence during the period of 1986-2005. Material and methods: Official data were used as obtained from the population register of cancer. The rates were calculated per 100,000 people according to the censuses of 1981, 1991 and 2002 and they were standardised by direct method of standardisation according to the "world population". Descriptive and epidemiological method of work. Results: In the observed period, the standardised rate of gastric cancer incidence was 9.33. The standardised rate in males was 12.52 and in females 6.52. The lowest non-standardised rate of incidence (10.05) was registered in 1997 and the highest one in 2004 (24.88). The highest rate of incidence was in the municipality of Gadžin Han (258.03) and the lowest one in the municipality of Ražanj (114.35). In the territory of the district, the highest rate in male patients was in those aging 70-74 (1213.98) and in female patients in those being over 75 years of age (537.68). The lowest rates were recorded in age groups of 5-9 (10.58) in females and 20-24 (7.84) in males. The most common localisation of the malignant gastric process was on cardia. Pathohistological verification is predominantly diffuse and intestinal type of adenocancer. From 1986 to 2005, the general incidence trend of this cancer is moderately increasing. Conclusion: The data show that the rate of gastric cancer incidence in the Nišava District is rather low in comparison with available international data.
