  Summary:
The development of health tourism of the Timok region is based on springs of thermo-mineral, mineral and thermal. The springs of thermo-mineral waters, their temperatures with indications and side-effects are the ground for the development of health tourism. Physical characteristics of these springs implicate that the waters are mostly clear, colorless, odor-free, tasteless, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 60 ºC, so they could be classified in hypo-, homeo- and hyper-thermal waters. The significance of these waters is multifunctional from the point of development of health tourism of the Timok region, basically for balneotherapy, as a special complex therapeutic discipline which is stimulating to an organism due to numerous factors and wellness programs with a goal of preserving the health, mind, spiritual and mental capabilities and recreation. The target areas are the spas of Sokobanja, Gamzigrad and Brestovac with their springs and wells of healing waters, possibilities of exploration of peloide mud, application of gases in balneotherapy treatment, stimulating and sedating climate in the environmentally friendly regions. For present and future all-round consideration of people’s needs for vacation, recreation, prevention, healing and rehabilitation, a perspective is being opened for the development of balneoclimatic places in the Timok region. However, not just presently asserted BKMs are being considered, which have implemented a high level of tourist, catering and health care facilities, with modern medical treatments and experienced medical stuff, but also small local spas, ecologically preserved and protected from pollution, which should be protected by a spatial plan from unlicensed construction and unregulated development and as such offered to future investors. In most cases, a selective product of health spa tourism of the Timok region includes two elements - health and wellness. The offer of health tourism is based on treatment and therapy of clients with health issues, which will help them improve their health. Wellness tourism is based on services for clients with good health who are in need of treatments which will enable them to keep the existing good heath and life quality.
Key words: health tourism, balneotherapy, wellness, rehabilitation, treatment
