  Summary:
The term CME is relatively new in domestic medical community, but not in international. Thanks to acceptance of developed countries experiences, in our country the process of CME is introduced in everyday practice. Despite of existence of CME centers at every Medical faculty of Serbian universities (except Priština) this process is not totally accepted within medical community. The entries of the newest Healthcare Law of the Republic of Serbia have created the law framework for introduction of CME system in Serbia. In this paper different definitions of the term CME are given, historical background of the CME is presented, and the accreditation systems for CME in EU and USA are described as well as actual state of the art in this field, in Serbia and countries originated from the former Yugoslavian republics.
